Life Detox for working women

Why Life Detox is beneficial for life?

Getting your room organized helps work and relationship go great!

Have you ever heard the word ‘Life Detox’? If you are beauty-conscious or interested in anti-aging, you might be familiar with idea of detox as removing toxins out of your body. The concept of ‘Life Detox’ we talk about here is that this idea of getting rid of toxins out and cleansing yourself being applied to living space in general.

We asked Miko, an interior designer and also the exponent of ‘Life Detox’, to talk about the key to practice ‘Life Detox’ in your everyday living for the Nikkei Woman Online readers.

Hi, my name is Miko. I published my very first book ‘Life Detox!’ a while ago and I have got to this theory of ‘Life Detox’ by my own experience.

Some years ago in summer I was being suffering from unexplained tiredness and unable to be assertive about anything, lack of energy and interest for some period of time. Initially I blamed for continuous heat wave though I started to wonder this was not caused by heat as I had a good appetite. When I started losing interest in fashion which I have been always very much into I realize something was going wrong with me.

Un explained fatigue was caused by cluttered room!

When I looked around inside my house, I realized that something was different from before though I meant to have got them organized. The books and magazines that should be disposed were piled up, unused stuff were left at the corner of the room… all the things in the room were just left there without a spark and that seemed to be a reflection of myself. Then I told myself that unexplained fatigue might have been caused by this room and if so I should begin with cleaning up a mess of the room.

Although I was supposed to be a professional in making rooms presentable as I have been working on interior decoration for many years, I started collecting unnecessary things without noticing by kept letting up on myself for a little too long.

Since then I kept disposing and organizing things around me as if I was totally obsessed with those activities. I focused on reviewing all the stuff in the house whether we really need them or not and disposed them if not and organizing things that I decided to keep in a place where they should be. After 10 days or so the rooms were all tidied up and my fatigue and powerlessness magically disappeared as well. I then became active person as I used to be and felt much calmer by consolidating stuff around the house and getting living space organized.

Taking an idea of ZEN into living space

This experience made me become interested in the relevance of the state of organizing and storing stuff in the house to the mental and physical balance of the people who are living in that house and have been doing lots of research on my own.

I tried to think of the type of place I feel comfortable and relax. The first place came to my mind was ZEN Buddhist temple. We feel relax physically and mentally with no distraction when we sit in a simple room at ZEN temple where there is no item unnecessary and totally is hustle-free. Organizing our own house like Zen temple is not exactly realistic though it is totally possible to tidy up our place by disposing unnecessary items.

Why should we be organizing things? I heard that the answer to this can be explained by a word ‘decision making’ which is important factor both for work and daily life.

Organizing your things is about constantly making a decision on necessity of ever increasing things by just leaving them and also about controlling number of items you keep in a house. On the other hand, living in a cluttered house with things everywhere would make a person too dull to make such decision as keep avoiding to make a decision on necessity. And if you continue leading life that way you start to feel cleaning up the place being troublesome and waste more time by spending time for searching things then end up getting stressed out without realizing.

Rooms are cluttered chronically for being not keen on organizing.

Takes time for putting things in order when trying to clean up a room.

Then cleaning up becomes troublesome.

We tend to put troublesome things off.

Things keep piling up all these time.

Rooms become more cluttered and never been tidied up.

Traffic for living space is interfered, more things to search for and get more stressed out because of cluttered rooms!

Suffering from fatigue like my case is not as serious as some other cases where relationship with family or a partner becomes strained or work to be badly disturbed. You may think it is just a matter of cleaning a room though organizing living space has a big impact on our mental state and really is a foundation of our life.

The experience of me getting over powerless condition and becoming aware of relationship between how the house is organized and state of mind of a person/people living in that house by observing various types of houses for doing interior related work have lead me to the idea of ‘Life Detox’
